Neuroaesthetics – How Having a Beautiful Office Affects Your Brain

Author

The term Neuroaesthetics, coined by Zeki, is a field of experimental science combining psychology and aesthetics. Neuroaesthetics investigates the rational and emotional response of the ways in which we, as people, react to visual stimuli that we find beautiful. By acknowledging and understanding Neuroaesthetics during the office design process a space with the users at the forefront of the design. Through strategic use of colours, lighting and textures, we will create a space which is beneficial to the human brain and productivity and has a positive effect on your team and those who enter your space on a psychological level.

Colour & Patterns

Colour is a key element in Neuroaesthetics; we’re all familiar with the psychology of colour and how different colours have the ability to influence how we feel. At Bluespace we love to incorporate your brand colours into your design, but it is worth considering the effects these colours will have on your team when deciding where and how they should be incorporated in the design. Patterns are a bit more complicated; whilst some patterns will please the mind, others they may be too busy and actually stress-inducing – it’s important that patterns are used with consideration when designing a workplace.

Lighting

We could write a whole blog about the importance of office lighting, in fact we might… Exposure to bright lighting activates regions of the brain that promote alertness but cool white lighting can also prompt negative responses due to its harshness and artificial feeling. Natural light is the optimum for any space, but when this isn’t an option we can assist in lighting design to create the best solution for the morale of your team.

Biophilic Design

Biophilia and Neuroaesthetics share a huge overlap in terms of office morale and productivity, this is down to the human instinct of finding nature beautiful (read our blog on biophilic interior design here). Including natural influences discourages symmetry which is perceived as boring and uninspiring to the human eye. Furnishing with natural finishes can create harmony in the space and smooth, flowing lines are more appealing and calming the mind than sharp jagged ones which are considered to be detrimental to productivity.

It’s not just a case of beauty, part of Neuroaesthetics is also the feeling of ease. Creating an office space that is not only beautiful but also welcoming and comforting to your team is a sure-fire way to increase productivity and morale. However, you don’t need to compromise style for comfort. Especially for your clients, you want the first impression to your office to be one of ease, not discomfort. Clever design has the power to create this.

Whilst what is considered aesthetically pleasing is entirely subjective, we will work closely with you and your team to ensure that your office design is perfect for you. Activity in the medial prefrontal cortex is stronger when you think something is more beautiful, stimulating this part of the brain helps people set and achieve goals.
